Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and all the legal, emotional, and physical issues that go along with them are commonly misunderstood in today's society. There is a great deal of good information available about these problems, as well as a great deal of poor information and misinformation as well. Some Domestic Violence Statistics
- In 2005, 389,100 women, and 78,180 men were victimized by an intimate partner. This accounted for 9 percent of all violent crime ("Criminal Victimization 2005" Washington CD: Bureau of Justice Statistics, 2006)
- Of female murder victims, 33 percent were killed by their husbands or boyfriends: 2 percent of male murder victims were killed by their wives or girlfriends (FBI "Crime in the United States, 2005:Expanded Homicide Data)
Some Sexual Assault Statistics
- 50 percent of sexual assaults are perpetrated by a "friend/acquaintance" of the victim, 12 percent by an "intimate partner" and 8 percent by "another relative"
- 1 out of 6 U.S. women and 1 out of 33 U.S. men has experienced an attempted or completed rape as a child and/or as an adult (National Violence Against Women Survey)
